Dr. Marc Safran

A board certified ophthalmologist who has practiced forover 30 years, Dr. Safran graduated from Princeton University in 1980 and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1985.   He completed ophthalmology residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1989 with additional training in strabismus and pediatric eye disease.    In 1995 he moved to the Syracuse area with his wife Mary Jumbelic, MD who served as the county's chief medical examiner.  They have three grown children.  

Dr. Safran maintains a leading edge in general ophthalmology, routinely performing small incision premium  cataract surgery and eye muscle procedures.  He was the recent medical director of the Syracuse Specialty Surgery Center.   He also volunteers his time to provide free eye surgery to children in South American countries each year with the group Healing the Children.  During the most recent trip to Guayaquil, Ecuador,  the team performed 101 surgeries on cross eyed children in four days.   Dr. Safran received the Susan Tiger Humanitarian Award from the organization in 2019.  

Outside of work, Dr. Safran is an artistic studio photographer -- winning a variety of honors and awards -- at a studio he established in downtown Syracuse.   His images are online at www.marcsafran.com and Instagram at @marcsafranphotography.   Most of his work is done in collaboration with area artists, dancers, actors and models.
