Cataract Surgery

Also known as phacoemulsification, cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the world. Nearly two million Americans undergo cataract surgery annually. By removing the opaque cataractous lens opacities through a small incision and replacing it with a clear intraocular lens implant vision can be restored to patients safely and with minimal discomfort. The lens is removed by ultrasound and the incisions are so small that no sutures are typically necessary. Nowadays, new premium Toric implants are also available to correct preexisting astigmatism. While the surgery is generally safe and effective, it is important to understand that risks to vision can occur.

When a lens becomes cataractous (hazy or opaque) it can be replaced with a clear intraocular lens implant.
