Marc Safran, M.D.
Background and Training
Dr. Safran was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1959 and attended Princeton University where he received a degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1980. He graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. Medical training was at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Safran completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, Illinois in 1988 where he received both the Clinical and Academic Residency Awards. He finished his training with a fellowship year at the Chicago Children's Hospital where he studied strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology under Dr. Mark Greenwald. He currently teaches residents both at SUNY and St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse.
Education
Dr. Safran initially worked in Illinois until moving to Syracuse in 1996. The Clay Eye Center has remained as a solo physician practice with a staff of dedicated and certified technicians. The office activies reflect Dr. Safran's training - seeing general practice, cataract, glaucoma, diabetic and pediatric cases. He performs small incision cataract surgeries as well as surgery for crossed-eyes (strabismus) and blocked tear ducts

Personal
Dr. Safran has three sons and is married to Dr. Mary Jumbelic, the Onondaga County Chief Medical Examiner. He has travelled extensively and has performed charitable surgical missions to Ecuador and Bolivia. Dr. Safran played accordion in college and on the street corners in Europe when he backpacked there in 1981. Currently he is very involved in video and photography and is active in community activities.
